Boater safety classes this week.

PENTWATER — Sign up for free boater safety classes set for Thursday and Friday, Aug. 4 and 5, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Pentwater Yacht Club to earn a boater safety certificate.

The class will be taught by Deputy Tim Simon, who is head of the marine division of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office. Students must attend both sessions.

Topics covered include: general boating and water safety; navigational rules; causes and prevention of crashes; operation and fueling techniques; environmental concerns; and reporting responsibility. 

The class offers an in person, traditional classroom setting; a written test — 75 percent or better to pass; and no minimum age requirement. However, students under 10 years of age must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or other adult approved by a parent or legal guardian.
