The following is the first column of a weekly series by Hesperia Community Library Director Kay Brennan. March is National Reading Month, and this is the ideal time to kick off Kay’s Korner. Happy reading!

It is starting to get sunny, so this is a perfect time to find a comfy chair in a sunny spot and read a book. Here are three interesting titles that you might enjoy.

Smick! By Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Juana Medina

Simple line drawings tell the story of Smick, a dog, and chick. Smick and chick play with a stick.  This is a great book for parents to read to preschoolers. It has a lot of action; very few words; and is a story the reader can ask, “What do you think will happenBook -1 next?.”

book -2Tuesday Tucks Me In by Fmr. Captain Luis Carlos Montalvan, USA with Bret Witter and photos by Dan Dion

Tuesday is a service dog. His owner is Luis, and they are best friends. This is the true story of Luis, a veteran, who was injured while serving in the Army and needed the help of a service dog.  Tuesday helps Luis do many things and knows over 80 commands. Tuesday helps Luis get dressed; turns on lights; and opens drawers. Luis suffers from PTSD, so Tuesday also comforts Luis when he is anxious. In return, Luis takes care of Tuesday by grooming and petting him. This books shows readers their close relationship and how a smart dog can help a person live a more fulfilling life.

Rupert Can Dance by Jules Feifferbook-3

Mandy had a cat named Rupert. Mandy loved to dance all day. What she didn’t know was that Rupert loved to dance, too. When Mandy went to sleep, Rupert put on her dance shoes and started to dance. One night when he was dancing, Mandy woke up. Of course she wanted him to dance with her and to teach him some dance steps. Rupert believed “Cats are not meant for lessons. Cats are free spirits.” How will Mandy ever understand Rupert?  Will Rupert ever dance again?  You have to read this story to find out!
