HART TOWNSHIP – A fifth-wheel camper trailer that overturned after becoming detached from the pickup truck that was hauling it on southbound US 31 near Polk Road caused the highway to temporarily shut down Monday, July 8, shortly before noon, according to Michigan State Police Sgt. Dan Thomas.

“Within the next half hour, we should have at least one lane open,” said Thomas.

The driver of the pickup truck hauling the camper suffered minor injuries and is expected to be OK, Thomas said.

The man was southbound on US 31 when he encountered workers performing road work for a Michigan Department of Transportation construction project on the highway. “He came upon the workers and swerved to avoid hitting them,” Thomas said. In doing so, the camper became detached from the truck and ended up on its side in the expressway. The truck continued on US 31 and slid down an embankment onto Buchanan Road, he said.

Emergency crews are cleaning up the debris. Assisting MSP are the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, Hart Police Department, Hart Area Fire Department and Life EMS.
