NEWFIELD TOWNSHIP – Approximately 50 firefighters from seven departments battled a pole barn blaze at Herin Brothers, Inc., a trucking company just outside of Hesperia Friday morning, May 3.

Hesperia Area Fire Department’s close proximity to the business located at 8121 E. M 20 played a significant role in firefighters’ quick response. Some firefighters were on scene within minutes of the call, said Hesperia Fire Captain Jason Newman.

When firefighters arrived, flames were visible from the back eave of the approximate 60-by-150 foot building, Newman said.

As of later Friday morning, the cause of the fire had not yet been determined nor was it immediately known if the building can be salvaged. Fortunately, firefighters’ quick response saved two semi trucks parked inside the pole barn. The keys were in the ignition, and firefighters drove them out to safety.

A nearby office building was saved from damage.

Hesperia firefighters take a break at the scene after the fire was extinguished.

“A lot of equipment (inside the barn) was saved,” Newman said.

In addition to Hesperia, other departments that responded included Ferry Township, Shelby-Benona, Walkerville, Grant Township, Fremont and White Cloud. Shelby and Ferry’s aerial trucks were used to fight the inferno, he said.

No one was injured, and the building is insured.

The call was dispatched shortly after 6 a.m.

Excavators came to the scene to assist with clean up.
