NEW ERA – A garage located at the corner of Ray Avenue and Second Street received minor damage from a fire Friday evening, Jan. 18.

Firefighters from Shelby-Benona and Grant Township departments swiftly extinguished the blaze.

The garage, owned by Tom Malda, is insured. Malda, who lives across the street from the building, said his wife saw flames coming from the chimney. “I saw flames through the window, and I thought, that’s not good,” he said.

The 2,400-square-foot building received some smoke damage. “A couple trusses burned,” he said.

Fortunately, the contents were not damaged. Malda said he parks his plow truck inside the garage.

The approximately 60-year-old garage is an old Oceana County Road Commission building, said New Era Police Chief Roy Strait.
