ROTHBURY — Liz Christensen of Rothbury received the Girl Scout Gold Award from the Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore Saturday, March 18.

Christensen, who is a Montague High School senior, earned her Gold Award for her Take Action community service project, Container Gardening Project. Her project focused on creating a sustainable source of fresh vegetables for low-income families.

Christensen worked with the Trinity Lutheran Church Women Helping Others group to distribute vegetable gardening kits, which included recipes and care tips. A pick-up day for families was organized, and will become an annual event by the Women Helping Others group.

By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, Christensen has become a community leader. “Her accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart,” states a press release from the Girl Scouts organization.

“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award designation is truly a remarkable achievement, and these young women exemplify leadership in all its forms,” said Mary Charles, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore. “They saw a need in their communities and around the world and took action. Their extraordinary dedication, perseverance, and leadership, is making the world a better place.”

Some universities and colleges offer scholarships unique to Gold Award recipients, and women who enlist in the US Armed Forces may receive advanced rank in recognition of their achievements.

“The Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. It recognizes girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects. Since 1916, girls have successfully answered the call to go gold, an act that indelibly marks them as accomplished members of their communities and the world.”
