HART — Police are seeking warrants for a 24-year-old Shelby man who allegedly stole a minivan in the Village of Shelby; led police on a high-speed chase; and then crashed into a large stack of bushel crates early Tuesday morning, Sept. 20.

“At 2:12 a.m. this morning Mason-Oceana Central Dispatch advised all police units in the county to be-on-the-look-out for a stolen vehicle that was just taken from the Village of Shelby,” states a press release from Lt. Craig Mast of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office. “The missing vehicle was a 2001 Dodge Caravan, blue in color. At 2:20 a.m. the Hart City patrolman saw the stolen vehicle on Polk Road in the City of Hart and attempted to stop that vehicle. The vehicle did pull over but only long enough for the Hart patrolman to just approach the vehicle, which then sped off. An Oceana County deputy was just pulling up to the traffic stop scene to assist as the stolen vehicle fled. The Oceana County deputy then pursued the stolen vehicle west on Polk Road until it turned southbound on North 72nd Avenue. The vehicle now began to accelerate attempting to get away from police vehicles following with lights and sirens. The vehicle continued southbound on 72nd Avenue until it reached a slight curve in the road at the intersection of West Scout Road, where the vehicle went off the road and struck a large stack of 20 bushel crates.

“Deputies now approached and found the suspect driver was unconscious inside of the vehicle. Oceana EMS was called to the scene, and the suspect was transported to Mercy Lakeshore Hospital in Shelby and was later transported to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon. The suspect appears to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“The suspect is a 24-year-old Hispanic male from Shelby. The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office will be requesting warrants for his arrest for flee and elude and OWI. Shelby police are investigating the stolen vehicle incident.”
