Dog dies in fire; rental home destroyed.

MEARS — A two-story rental house at 5707 Third St. is a total loss following a fire early Sunday morning, Sept. 4, according to Hart Fire Chief Ken Klotz. No humans were injured, but the family dog died in fire, Klotz said.

The two-story house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at approximately 5 a.m., Klotz said. The home, which is owned by Scott Monroe, was insured, Klotz said, but the renters did not mears fire -2have insurance. Tony Gonzales rented the house, which was occupied by a family of five that includes two adults and three children. Red Cross is assisting the family, the chief said.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown, but the Oceana County Fire Investigation Team is investigating the scene.

Assisting the Hart Area Fire Department were Shelby-Benona and Pentwater fire departments. Tankers were brought in by Crystal Township and Ferry Township fire departments. Oceana County EMS and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
