Ted and Gina Ferwerda greet their customers with friendly smiles at Wave Club Water Sport Rentals and Wet Head Beach Shop on Silver Lake.

Wave Club offers so much adrenaline-filled enjoyment, adults feel like kids again and kids never want their action-packed day to end. Wet Head, which doubled its store space this season, has a full line of trendy beach clothing and accessories, skateboards, and much more.

The two businesses are owned by local couple, Ted and Gina Ferwerda. They took over ownership of Wave Club 20 years ago when the two first married. Ted’s parents, Edie and the late Joe Ferwerda, began the business in 1962. During the 51 years Wave Club has been in existence, it has evolved into a one-of-kind business. It began when the street that leads to lake was just a dirt road, Gina said. They offered small row boats

and sailboats for rental, as well as bait and tackle. Now, the business has blossomed into a headquarters for summer action on the lake. There is a fleet of approximately 60 boats, including Yamaha WaveRunners, pontoon boats, sailboats, paddle boats, ski boats, canoes and kayaks. Wave Club also offers stand-up paddle boards and sandboards for rental. Ski and tubing equipment are also available. Wave Club just began offering 14-foot Hobie Cat sailboats this season.

Gina, a photographer and designer, started her own clothing line, Wet Head, and opened the shop in 2012. Her keen sense of style transcends throughout the store. “Everyone has their own niche, and I wanted

to come in with what no one else has,” she said. Gina certainly achieved her goal as the store offers a long list of items that cannot be purchased anywhere else locally. “We are the only retailer on this side of the state with Kid Rock’s Made in Detroit clothing brand,” she said.

For those adrenaline junkies who want to capture every daring feat they perform, Wet Head sells GoPro cameras that can be worn or mounted while skateboarding, dune riding or whatever sport they crave. Check out the shop’s impressive stock of Z-Flex Longboards and Penny skateboards.

To celebrate this season’s expansion, Gina is planning a grand re-opening July 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be sales, fun activities and even a special musical guest whose identity has not yet been revealed.

The couple’s daughter, Ariana, works at both places — as well as their other business, Silver Creek RV Resort — when she is home from school at Michigan State University. They employ about 10-12 workers each summer at Wave Club.
