Scammers posing as Pentwater police on the phone.

PENTWATER — The Pentwater Police Department is warning residents that there is a phone scam going on that involves people pretending to be police officers.

“It has come to our attention that scammers are stating they are officers with Pentwater Police Department (THIS IS FALSE),” states a post on the PPD Facebook page. “These scammers will often tell you that you have a warrant and you need to pay immediately over the phone. We will NEVER call you and ask for any types of payments. Sometimes these scammers will ask for gift cards, bitcoin, personal information, etc. If you are unsure after receiving a phone call from one of these scammers, contact Pentwater Police Department directly at 231-869-8301, Or contact Central Dispatch at 231-869-5858 and ask to speak with the on-duty Pentwater Police Officer.”
