GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP – A 25-year-old Greenwood Township woman faces multiple felonies, including safe breaking, for allegedly stealing a safe containing “a large amount of cash” from her mother’s home on McKinley Road, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

In addition to safe breaking, Carissa Leann Hale, of 9329 E. McKinley Rd., was arraigned in 78th District Court on charges of larceny of firearms, larceny in a building and felony firearm. Hale also faces a felony charge of controlled substance possession – narcotic or cocaine less than 25 grams – in a separate case stemming from a Michigan State Police arrest.

Safe breaking is punishable by up to life in prison.

“Deputies responded to a residence, Jan. 6, in the southeast corner of the county where several items had been stolen,” said Mast. “The suspect fled to Florida and had to be extradited.” Hale was extradited to Michigan Tuesday and was lodged in the Oceana County Jail.

It is alleged that she also stole two handguns from her mother’s home, where Hale also lived.

“Our detectives did a lot of follow-up with assistance from the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office,” said Mast. “They found a safe in the Fremont area that had been broken into. They spoke with witnesses who were aware of the handguns.” The handguns, which have not been recovered, were likely sold by Hale for drug money, he said.

Hale used some of the stolen cash to bail several people out of the Newaygo County Jail, the sheriff said.

A preliminary exam is set for March 11 at 3 p.m.

She remains lodged in jail on a $75,000 cash bond.
