BIG PRAIRIE TOWNSHIP, Newaygo County – The Hart post of the Michigan State Police is investigating the death of a 77-year-old Newaygo County woman who was killed by a pit bull, which was a family pet.

“On Nov. 13 at approximately 7 p.m., troopers were dispatched to a residence in Big Prairie Township to an unresponsive female that appeared to have been bitten by a family dog,” states an MSP press release. “First responders’ life-saving measures were not successful, and Sharon Lee Daniels was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The initial investigation determined Daniels was home alone with three family dogs when one of the dogs inflicted fatal bites to her body. Daniels was disabled and was confined to a wheelchair. Troopers are continuing to investigate the incident as an autopsy is pending. No criminal activity is suspected at this time.

“Three pit bull dogs were seized by Newaygo County Animal Control officers and are currently being held at the Newaygo County Animal Shelter. State troopers are continuing to investigate the incident.”

Troopers on scene were assisted by the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department, Newaygo County Animal Control, Big Prairie Fire Department and Life EMS.
