Women Who Care group has donated $310,700.

PENTWATER – Records are made to be broken, and the Women Who Care of Oceana County set several records for themselves at their Sept. 4 meeting at the Pentwater Yacht Club.

First, with the group’s latest contributions, total gifts from members since June of 2012 now total $310,700. And second, with the addition of six new members, the community-minded group now numbers 157. Their first meeting in 2012 drew 53 members.

On Tuesday, attendees chose to have each member write a $100 personal check to Local Animal Shelter Support Inc. (LASSI), which supports the veterinary care of stray, abandoned, neglected and injured companion animals of the Oceana County Animal Control Shelter in Shelby. LASSI volunteers share the love of animals, and a strong belief in their right for a second chance at being a wonderful and loving companion. More information is found at lassipets.com.

The women meet for an hour on the first Tuesday of March, June, September and December. Attendees submit a worthy cause to be drawn at random. Three are selected and a short presentation is made about each. Then, the women each vote for one of the three nominated nonprofits serving Oceana that they feel merits the support of everyone. The nonprofit receiving the most votes receives a $100 personal contribution from every member. That includes members who could not attend the meeting.
