BENONA TOWNSHIP — The Women Who Care of Oceana County – now with 155 members, and counting – met for one hour at the Stony Lake Inn, Dec. 5, and chose to have a new unit of Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters (COVE) receive a $100 personal check from each WWC member. COVE’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) unit, which launched less than a year ago, will receive a total of $15,500.

SANE is made up of registered nurses who have completed specialized education and clinical preparation in the medical forensic care of someone who has experienced sexual assault or abuse. One component of the streamlined care that COVE SANE can offer is the comprehensive medical forensic examination. Anyone can access COVE SANE services by calling COVE’s 24/7 crisis line at 800-950-5808. All services are free, confidential, and available to anyone over the age of 12.

“The victims of sexual assault have so very few places to turn,” said Jane Thompson, the WWC member who nominated the unit at the meeting. The funds will be used for COVE SANE operations, and for getting the word out about its availability to victims in Oceana, Lake and Mason counties.

These latest gifts bring the total giving by WWC members to $265,500 since the group’s first meeting in June of 2012.

On the first Tuesday of March, June, September and December, the women meet for an hour; learn about three worthy causes serving county residents; and choose one that everyone agrees to support with $100 personal checks. Socializing follows for those who have the time to stay.

Membership is open to any woman who wants to be involved in this unique, joint effort to support Oceana causes. The next meeting is Tuesday, March 6, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Boathouse Bar and Grille, 5164 West Monroe Road, Pentwater.
