GREENWOOD TWP. — Greed is the apparent motive for a for a 44-year-old Montague man who reportedly stole a trailer just over a week ago from David Allen Racing Motorsports only to return and allegedly steal a snowmobile.

A larceny of a 2014 Shorelander utility trailer valued at $2,000 from the DAR lot was reported to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, Feb. 17.

“Our investigation has continued since Feb. 18, and we had developed a suspect vehicle and some gross characteristics of the suspect from surveillance video of the David Allen Racing store footage,” said OCSO Lt. Craig Mast. “On the morning of Feb. 25, our deputies were again dispatched to DAR on 9600 S. Maple Island Road  to respond to the report of a stolen snowmobile.” They discovered that a 2011 black and white Bombardier SKT Ski-Do, valued at approximately $8,500, was stolen.  The video showed that the same suspect vehicle was used in both crimes.

“Through an investigation, a suspect was developed and the stolen property was recovered at the suspect’s residence,” Mast stated. “The suspect is a 44-year-old Montague man. Criminal charges are pending as the investigation is still ongoing.”

The DAR facility, which is located near Fremont,  was totally destroyed in a fire last November, and the business has been rebuilt.
