Free boater safety classes this summer.

PENTWATER — Oceana County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Simon, who is head of the sheriff’s office marine division, is teaching free boater safety classes this summer.

Deputy Simon will administer a test on the last day, and boater safety certificates will be issued to all who pass. This allows those who successfully pass the training to operate personal watercraft, such as wave runners and jet skis, as well as other boats.

Students must attend both days of the class. Students are required to pre-register online. Plenty of space is available. Refreshments will be provided.

Students aged 10 and under must be accompanied by a parent. To sign up, visit boater safety education and scroll down to the date you plan to attend. Certificates will be created online.

There are three different opportunities this summer to take the classes. There will be a session June 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Charlie’s Marina in Pentwater; July 14 and 15 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Pentwater Public School; and Aug. 4 and 5 at from 8 a.m. to noon at the newly-rebuilt Pentwater Yacht Club.
