SHELBY — Shelby students worked hard to make Christmas brighter for less fortunate children in the area.

Shelby Middle School students raised over $1,550, along with a massive stack of toys, for the Toys for Tots charitable organization. Shelby High School’s National Honor Society raised over $1,700 for Toys for Tots.

Thomas Read Elementary School students raised $915. “Our student council students then went shopping with that money. New Era Elementary students brought in over 400 gifts to donate. I am very proud of both schools,” said Kara VanderWeele who is the principal at both elementary schools.

The schools had friendly “coin war” competitions to raise money.
