Sheriff warns of phone scam.

HART — Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast is warning residents of a phone scam involving callers who claim to be from the Social Security Administration.

“They are claiming to be from the Social Security Office, demanding social security numbers,” said Sheriff Mast. “They are claiming (victims) are going to be arrested or suffer financial consequences,” he said.

Most of the calls are coming from 800 numbers or non-listed numbers, he said.

The sheriff’s office has received three related complaints in the past week.

“People always need to be on the lookout,” he said. If you receive one of these scam calls, do not give out any information and hang up.
