SHELBY — The Village of Shelby was recently chosen by the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to host a temporary long-term community development position.

The person will work full-time in the village hall for 15 months tentatively slated to begin in June, said Village Administrator Robert Widigan.

“The purpose of the position is to support and advance community economic development goals. Projects will help improve organizational capacity, increase local collaboration, and remove barriers to development,” Widigan said.

Shelby was chosen to host the position over all communities that applied within its region, which includes approximately 40-50 eligible communities. One community was chosen in each of Michigan’s 10 prosperity regions. A panel of representatives from CEDAM and MEDC chose Shelby village.

“The village is pleased to be chosen as a host community,” Widigan said. “We are eager to hit the ground running with this additional resource and advance Shelby’s identified economic development goals.”

“The village is ripe for improvement – with strong recreational, business and downtown assets to build upon,” said Community Foundation for Oceana County CEO Tammy Carey. “This level of commitment speaks to the readiness of the community to move forward on the goals identified in the Shelby Area Community Assessment, as supported by the foundation in 2018.”

The community development position’s start date is obviously dependent upon the status of the COVID-19 pandemic.
