SHELBY – The Shelby Optimist Club announced its annual “Outstanding Boy and Girl” winners at the Shelby Academic Banquet earlier this month.

Seniors Mishelle Brito and David Barranco-Calixto were honored for their excellence in leadership, ability and character.

Mishelle currently attends West Shore Community College with the Academy of Science, Math and Technology (ASM Tech) Program and plans to attend either Michigan State University or Ferris State University to major in pediatrics. She is a member of the Shelby High School National Honor Society, SHS Band and is a peer tutor mentor and school writing center mentor. She also volunteers at Shelby’s Love Inc. and SHS Pride Day.

David moved from Mexico when he was 13 years old, and he did not speak English. But he quickly learned to speak fluently, and carries an impressive 3.9 GPA. He plans to attend either Ferris State University or Michigan State University to major in finance. David is a member of NHS, Science Olympiad, and SHS Math Center.
He also volunteers at Love Inc. and SHS Pride Day.

A total of 16 seniors, 20 juniors, and 22 sophomores were presented with academic letters for maintaining a minimum 3.5 GPA during the 2018-2019 school year.

Joan Lound, a 1967 Shelby graduate, was the guest speaker.
