NEW ERA – Several Michigan State Police troopers surrounded a house on Third Street near the Wesco convenience store for approximately five hours Friday, Aug. 16, in an attempt to contact a suspect who allegedly fled from police at a high rate of speed on US 31.

The suspect – a man in his early 30s – was not armed or considered dangerous, said MSP Lt. Matt Kanitz. “It was a non-violent incident, and he does not have a violent history,” said Kanitz. The public was not in any danger, he added.

Kanitz and several other police officers were on scene after midnight, but were planning to clear the scene soon, he said.

Police spoke with the suspect via cell phone while he was inside the house that is believed to be his home. “We tracked him to this location and believe he is in there,” Kanitz said.

Police will attempt to make contact with the suspect again.

New Era Police Department assisted, and Life EMS was also on scene for standby.

More information will be provided when it is available.
