Man dies in tractor accident.

BENONA TOWNSHIP – A 64-year-old Grand Rapids man died when the tractor he was operating flipped over and crushed him Monday evening, May 20, in the 4600 block of South 44th Avenue, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

Gary Mills was declared dead at the scene. “It was a horrible accident,” Mast said.

“It is my unfortunate duty to advise you that yesterday evening at 7:18 p.m., the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 4600 block of South 44th Avenue to investigate a farm accident,” Mast states in a press release. “At that scene, deputies found a 64-year-old Grand Rapids man had been operating an older Oliver tractor on a family member’s farm. It appeared he was attempting to expand a power take-off shaft on a mower and had chained it to a tree and to the tractor in an attempt to pull it open. During this, the tractor flipped over and immediately killed the gentleman operating it.”

Also responding to the scene were the Michigan State Police, the Shelby-Benona Fire Department, Life EMS and the Oceana Sheriff’s Victim Services Unit.
