Great Lakes Energy People Fund donates over $5,000 to local organizations.

Great Lakes Energy People Fund recently awarded two Oceana County organizations a total of $5,600. John Square Recreation Area Committee of Mears received $5,000 for a well in the community recreation area while Harbor House of Hart received $600 for the replacement of three windows.

The People Fund is supported by the voluntary contributions of Great Lakes Energy members who allow their electric cooperative to round up their bill each month to the next dollar. More than $3.5 million in grants have been awarded since 1999 to charitable and community organizations throughout Great Lakes Energy’s 26-county service area, which stretches along the western side of Michigan.

“Giving to local communities through the People Fund is such an easy way to make a greater impact,” said President/CEO Bill Scott. “For less than a dollar a month, our members can show their commitment to local initiatives by rounding their bill up to the nearest dollar.”

Great Lakes Energy members can enroll in the People Fund by calling 888-485-2537 or visiting gtlakes.com. All 100 percent of the funds collected are used for grants.

Non-profit organizations in the Great Lakes Energy service area can request a grant application online at gtlakes.com/grant-application-request. The next grant application deadline is Oct. 15.
