MUSKEGON – A 39-year-old man died in the Muskegon County Jail Thursday morning, April 4, according to Muskegon County Sheriff Michael Poulin.

Paul Douglas Bulthouse was found “unresponsive” in his cell at 6 a.m. while deputies were making their rounds, Poulin said.

“Deputies immediately summoned jail medical staff,” the sheriff said.

Bulthouse had been in jail since March 22 for probation violation. “Inmate Bulthouse was being held in a single-person observation area designed for detoxification. The detoxification cells are designed to allow staff the ability of continuous monitoring.”

The cause of death is under investigation by the sheriff’s office pending autopsy results from the medical examiner’s office. “As a matter of procedure, the sheriff’s office investigative unit is brought in on all inmate deaths,” Poulin said.
