NEWAYGO COUNTY – Three-year-old Alaya Melchor died in a two-vehicle crash in Big Prairie Township Saturday afternoon, March 9, and her two siblings, father and a family friend were injured.

The Melchor family was at a two-way stop at Elm Avenue and Baseline Road when the driver of a pickup truck ran a stop sign and hit the SUV with Casey Melchor, 29, Alaya Melchor, Airial Melchor, 7, and Abel Melchor, 5, inside.

Alaya died at the scene.

Airial and Abel are at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

“March 9, 2019 our lives were flipped upside down,” states a Go Fund Me Page set up for the family. “We got the phone call that Casey, his children, and a close family friend were in a car accident. Unfortunately, our sweet baby Alaya (3) was pronounced dead at the scene. Abel (5) was airlifted to Helen DeVos children’s hospital where he has a fractured skull, a small blood clot on his brain, and a broken leg. Airial (7) is banged up, major concussion and some stitches in her forehead. Casey has some fractured vertebraes in his neck, and the close family friend has a few broken ribs.”

The crash occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m., according to the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office.

“Upon arrival on scene, deputies found that a pick-up truck, being driven southbound on Elm Avenue, had not stopped at the intersection of Baseline Road. The pick-up truck struck a SUV heading eastbound on Baseline Road,” states NCSO.

The pick-up truck driver, who is an 18-year-old Morley man, and his passenger, a 14-year-old Morley boy, were not injured.

The Melchors’ family friend, who is a 27-year-old New Era woman, was driving the SUV, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The accident remains under investigation by the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office. However, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the accident.”

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the White Cloud Police Department, Michigan State Police, Big Prairie Fire Department, White Cloud Fire Department, Life EMS, and Mecosta EMS.
