SHELBY TOWNSHIP – Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Monday, March 4, shortly after 3 p.m. on Shelby Road near the US 31 on-ramp in frigid, snowy conditions, according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.

A 2012 Chrysler driven by a 19-year-old Allendale woman and a 2002 Jeep Liberty driven by a 49-year-old Shelby woman collided. Both drivers were injured as well as an 18-year-old Shelby man, who was a passenger in the Jeep.

The driver of the Chrysler told the investigating deputy that she “merged into what she believed was the left turn lane in an attempt to turn left onto the US 31 southbound entrance ramp. She stated she saw a vehicle parked on the entrance ramp with its hood up, so she stopped.” She told the deputy that while she was stopped in the left turn lane, her vehicle was struck by the Jeep which was eastbound and sliding out of control.

The Jeep driver told the deputy that the Chrysler was turning left in front of her vehicle “when it suddenly stopped in the middle of the road.” She said that she “took evasive action to avoid a collision” by attempting to drive around it, but was unable to due to the snowy and icy road surface.

The Jeep driver and passenger were transported by Life EMS to Mercy Health Partners Hackley Campus in Muskegon, and the Chrysler driver was transported by Life EMS. The report did not indicate where she was taken.

All three individuals were wearing seatbelts.
