Cause of fire ‘undetermined.’

HART – The cause of the fire that destroyed the Bill Wells’ “602 House” on State Street last week, Feb. 5, is “undetermined,” said Specialist Trooper Joseph Allen with the Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit.

“There was too much destruction to determine the cause,” Allen said. There was no sign of “foul play” that would indicate arson was committed, he said.

The landmark building, which served as a boarding house and barber shop, was insured. The private fire investigator from the insurance company drew the same conclusion, Allen said.

Eleven people were displaced by the early morning fire, including owners Bill and Faye Wells. Two people transported themselves to Mercy Health Partners Lakeshore Campus in Shelby for smoke inhalation, according to the Hart Police Department.
