Getty Park renovation plan enters final phases.

Village residents can now view proposed plan.

SHELBY – The Village of Shelby has been busy the past several months discussing possible improvements for Getty Park, and looking for ways to fund the project in preparation of submitting a grant application to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) in 2019.

The village council unveiled the proposed renovation plan for the park during regular session, Dec. 10.

Village officials engaged Fleis & VandenBrink Engineering to take various improvement ideas and develop a master plan for the park. At the meeting, Village Administrator Rob Widigan reviewed the proposed renovation plan with the council and members of the audience and discussed preliminary plans to submit a grant application for the renovation of Getty Park.

The master plan shows a splash pad, shelter area, additional parking, walking paths, new playground, pickleball, tennis courts, along with a basketball court. The plan also shows a small skate park, new seating, and picnic areas. The one park amenity in the park currently, the restroom/storage building, will be renovated in the new plan.

Members of the community can now view the proposed renovation plan for Getty Park on the Village of Shelby’s webpage, http://shelbyvillage.com/village-parks/, or by stopping by the village hall during regular business hours.

It has been the long-held intentions of the village council to seek funding assistance for the Getty Park project by submitting a grant application to the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF). Applications are due by April 1, 2019. Over its 40-year history, the MNRTF has had a tremendous impact on Michigan’s landscape. Over $1 billion has been awarded to state and local units of government and has been used to acquire and develop recreation land in all 83 counties of the state.

Residents will have the opportunity to make comments about the proposed master plan and pending grant application for Getty Park by attending a public hearing Monday, Jan. 14, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. hosted by the village council at the Shelby Village Hall, 218 N. Michigan Avenue.

If residents are unable to attend this public hearing, written comments can be mailed to Rob Widigan, Village Administrator, 218 N. Michigan Avenue, Shelby, MI. 49455.
