SHELBY – The Village of Shelby Parks and Recreation Committee and village staff have been busy the past several months discussing possible improvements for Getty Park along with exploring funding options for the project, states a press release issued by the village.

Residents will have two opportunities to provide feedback about park improvements during public hearings Tuesday, Nov. 20, and Monday, Dec. 10. Both meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. in the village hall.

“Village officials and staff have been reviewing possible park improvements such as new tennis/pickle ball and basketball courts; new playground; renovating the existing restrooms; creating better accessibility throughout the park; a new covered picnic area; and the addition of a splash pad,” the press release states.

“With these recent ideas for upgrading Getty Park, some of the above-mentioned amenities were not listed in the village’s current 2015-2020 Parks and Recreation Plan. This created a need to amend the current parks and rec plan.

“A possible funding source for the project could come from the grant programs administered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). For grant applications to be considered for funding, the village must have a current and approved recreation plan on file with MDNR. The village will seek grant assistance for the projected improvements and must now update the current 2015-2020 Parks and Recreation Plan.

“Residents can now view the current 2015-2020 Parks and Recreation Plan and the proposed amendment to the plan at the Shelby Area Public Library, village hall and on the Village of Shelby’s webpage, www.shelbyvillage.com/village-parks/.

“In addition, residents will have the opportunity to make comments about the proposed amendment to the 2015-2020 Parks and Recreation Plan by attending one of two public hearing meetings. The first public hearing will be during the Shelby Village Planning Commission on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and the second public hearing will be during the regularly-scheduled Shelby Village Council Meeting Monday, Dec. 10. Each meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Shelby Village Hall, 218 N. Michigan Avenue, Shelby.
