Man faces jail for stealing elderly mother’s SSI checks.

HART — A 49-year-old Grand Rapids man faces serving up to 90 days in jail for stealing his elderly mother’s supplemental security income (SSI) checks.

Russell Richard Peterson, of 3789 Timberlee Ave. NW, pleaded “no contest” to larceny by conversion $1,000-$20,000 in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Sept. 10.

Sentencing guidelines in the case are 0-9 months, said Judge Robert D. Springstead, and the plea agreement calls for a cap on his jail of 90 days.

The total amount in checks that he stole is over $1,000, said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon. The thefts occurred from late 2016 to early 2018 in Oceana County.

Peterson has been lodged in the Oceana County Jail for 64 days. His attorney, Terry Shaw, requested that his bond of $10,000/cash/surety/10 percent, be reduced to a personal recognizance bond. Judge Springstead allowed the bond reduction in light of the jail being over-capacity.

Sentencing is set for Nov. 5 at 9 a.m.
