Get in the ‘spear-it’ for the 45th Annual National Asparagus Festival.

HART — Enjoy the longest running asparagus festival in the country during this weekend’s 45th Annual National Asparagus Festival. The festival is the official kick-off to summer in Oceana County.

Oceana County is known as “The Asparagus Capital of the Nation” and is one of the leading areas for asparagus production in the United States.

The highlight event is the Joan Glover Royale Parade, which begins at 2 p.m. rain or shine. Watch for the newly-crowned 2018 Asparagus Queen Kendra Larios-Mendez and First Runner Up Rachel Bruinsma, along with the Shelby and Hart high school marching bands and the Scottville Clown Band. The parade starts at the Oceana County Fairgrounds and ends near the Hart Commons.

Festival Schedule

Friday, June 8, 2018:

– 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Arts and Crafts Fair, Oceana County Courthouse Lawn. Official National Asparagus Festival (NAF) merchandise will be available in the NAF tent this year.

– 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: NAF information, located in the NAF office, downtown Hart.

– 6 p.m.: Family Movie Night. Watch a new release movie on a big screen outside. Located in the tent on the corner of State and Main streets across from the Hart Commons.

Saturday, June 9, 2018:

– 7:30 a.m.: The Ryan Walsworth Spear-It 5k Run/Walk at Silver Lake. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., at the Dune Town Mall in Silver Lake. Race starts at 9 a.m.

– 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.: NAF information, located in the NAF office, downtown Hart.

– 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Arts and Crafts Fair, Oceana County Courthouse Lawn.

– 9:30 a.m.: Asparagus Farm Tour, departs from the NAF office. Enjoy a 45-60 minute tour of an asparagus farm in Oceana County. Witness the harvesting, and talk with the growers about the asparagus industry. Arrive early to sign up.

– 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Taste of Asparagus Competition, formerly known as the Food Show. Taste test a variety of asparagus dishes and talk with the chefs. Vote for your favorite dish to be awarded the People’s Choice award. Located at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 109 Washington St. Adults: $5, children 5-12: $3, under 5: free.

– 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: The Kidz Zone, kids’ entertainment and activities, downtown Hart.

– 2 p.m.: The Joan Glover Royale Parade, rain or shine. Watch the bands, floats, queens, dignitaries and antique vehicles. The parade starts at the Oceana County Fairgrounds and ends near Hart Commons.

– 3:30 p.m.: Post-parade entertainment provided by the Scottville Clown Band, located in the tent at the corner of State and Main street across from the Hart Commons.

– 3:30-5 p.m.: The Kidz Zone, kids’ entertainment and activities, downtown Hart.

Sunday, June 10:

– 7:30 a.m. to noon: Fly-In Breakfast, Oceana County Airport, 1805 W. Baseline Rd., Shelby. Aircraft displays, asparagus, door prizes and a pancake breakfast.
