HESPERIA — Village residents are seeing a familiar face in the Hesperia patrol car these days.

Robert Farber, who retired as Oceana County Sheriff at the end of 2016, is temporarily back on the beat as Hesperia’s interim police chief.

Farber is filling in until a permanent replacement can be found for Dale Gibbs, whose contract was not renewed by the Hesperia Village Council last month, according to a village official.

Thirty five of Farber’s 36 years in law enforcement took place at the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office. He worked one year as a part-time officer for the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office, the Hesperia Police Department and the White Cloud PD.

Farber also filled in as interim police chief for the Village of Shelby in 2017 following Terry TenBrink’s retirement as police chief. Ryan Furman has since been hired as Shelby’s police chief.

The former sheriff’s first job was at the Hesperia Police Department, so he’s back where his career first began. “I’m back where I started,” he said.
