PENTWATER — Pentwater Service Club members will volunteer as Salvation Army Red Kettle collection bell ringers in front of the Pentwater Post Office from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 16.

The shifts are as follows:

Friday: Mark Benner (9-9:30 a.m.), Gigi Mitchell (9:30–10 a.m.), Norm Shotwell (10-11 a.m.), George Richey (11-11:30 a.m.), and Harry Waller (11:30 a.m to noon).

Saturday: Dean Gustafson (9–9:30 a.m.), Juanita Pierman (9:30–10:30 a.m.), Claudia Ressel-Hodan (10:30–11:30 a.m.) and Harry Waller (11:30 a.m. to noon).

This continues a service club outreach project started over 25 years ago. The Salvation Army Red Kettle tradition dates back to 1891 in San Francisco when one of its captains put out an iron kettle to collect funds so people in need were properly fed during the holidays. Today, contributions into the kettles from passersby enable the organization to continue its year-round efforts to help those who would be otherwise forgotten.

Through the local outreach of the Salvation Army’s Family Social Service Center on Melendy Street in Ludington, those needing a hand can receive help with food, personal care items, utility payments, emergency shelter, rent/mortgage payments, medical prescriptions, clothing and furniture.

“We serve thousands of people during the year and we must stretch our resources to the maximum to serve as many people as we can with the resources we have been blessed with for our community,” says a posting on the Salvation Army website.
