SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A 24-year-old New Era man was arrested for operating while under the influence of heroin Monday morning, Dec. 4, after crashing his vehicle into a ravine off Hayes Road near 72nd Avenue, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

The suspect reportedly left the crash scene, but “someone made him return to the scene,” Mast said.

The man suffered two separate heroin overdoses the previous day, Mast said. The second OD required the use of a Narcan kit by Oceana County sheriff’s Sgt. Cam Hanson, who “very likely” saved the man’s life. Hanson responded to West Stone Road in Benona Township at 3:43 a.m. Sunday after being dispatched to the scene for a heroin overdose.

The man had suffered from a heroin overdose earlier and was released from Mercy Health Partners Lakeshore Campus in Shelby Sunday, Mast said. Following the second overdose, he was transported by ambulance back to the Shelby hospital, the sheriff said.

The man was not injured in Monday’s 7:43 a.m. crash, Mast said, although he is detoxing from the heroin while lodged in the Oceana County Jail.
