HART — Beginning Wednesday Oct. 11, people can vote online to help the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office earn grant funding for its new K 9 Unit.

The sheriff’s office win could up to $5,000 depending on how many votes it receives.

The money will be used to “sustain the program,” said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast, who brought the K 9 program back to Oceana County after he was elected last year.

Voters can vote once a day every day, Mast said. Go to http://www.aftermath.com and click on 2017 K 9 Grant in the upper right hand corner, and then cast your vote for the OCSO K 9 Unit.

The money will be used to feed the dog or pay veterinary bills, Mast said.

Mast strongly encourages Oceana County residents and visitors to vote. “It doesn’t cost the tax payers any money,” he said.

Voting continues through mid-November.

The new K 9, named Kreiger, recently went into service for the sheriff’s office and has already had three successful tracks, Mast said. The 17-month-old male black German Shepherd’s name is the German word for warrior, he said. Kreiger will fight to protect and serve Oceana County.

Be on the lookout for an upcoming OCP story about Kreiger joining the sheriff’s office.
