Firefighters save home from blaze

February 20, 2015

NEWFIELD TWP. — Hesperia and Ferry Township firefighters saved a home, located at 8817 E. Loop Rd., from an electrical fire Friday morning, Feb. 20.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at approximately 10 a.m. Fremont Fire Department was also dispatched but later told to disregard, said Hesperia Assistant Fire Chief Bob Eichenberg.

“Smoke was coming from the attic,” Eichenberg said. The fire was contained to the attic, but a bedroom ceiling had to be pulled out, he said. “It was a small electrical fire, and there was not much damage.”

No injuries occurred, the assistant chief said. The small, single-story home is owned by Dan Hammond, and it is insured. The occupants of the home will have to stay elsewhere for approximately a week until the damages are repaired, he said. “They are going to stay with family,” he said. The insurance company had a restoration crew heading to the site. Total damages to property and contents is estimated at $20,000.
